U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to Conduct Remedial Investigation Field Activities

Boise, Idaho – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will resume Remedial Investigation field activities in July 2022 at the former Boise Army Barracks, a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) located near Boise, Idaho. Initial Remedial Investigation field activities occurred in 2019 and 2020. This investigation is a continuation of routine work and is part of a larger nationwide effort by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to investigate possible environmental contamination at FUDS sites.

The Remedial Investigation field activities will be conducted on public lands managed by the City of Boise, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the US Forest Service (USFS). Field activities will be suspended in November 2022, and resume in the spring of 2023.

The Remedial Investigation field activities may involve surveying with a metal detector or other specialized instruments, investigating individual subsurface items, or collecting soil and/or water samples. Public access will be temporarily restricted in some localized portions of the Boise Barracks to allow for the completion of the work. Limited trail closures are anticipated during Fall 2022  field activities.

Documents related to the site history are available for review in the government documents section of the Boise Public Library in Boise, Idaho.  For more information about the investigation at the Formerly Used Defense Sites and the former Boise Army Barracks, contact the USACE, Kansas City District, Public Affairs Office at 816-389-3486.
